Cultural Anthropology & Environmental Science and Policy
This summer I went to the Olympics in Paris?
Growing up, I always had a magnetic attraction to the ocean and fell in love with everything below its surface. I have always loved visiting the beach with my family, and some of my best memories revolve around the ocean and the immense opportunities and experiences that its existence has provided me. I’ve always been incredibly fortunate to have these experiences, and want to do something with my life that creates increased environmental equity so that kids all over get to experience the magic of connecting with the outdoors. I am currently majoring in Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Environmental Science and policy, with hopes of doing something in the realm of public service after I graduate. Whether it’s law school or working with the state department, I want to find a vocational outlet that allows me to connect with communities and do something little me would be proud of.
Stepping outside of academics, I am incredibly involved here at Duke! In addition to serving as SPIRE President, this year I am the Vice President of Recurring Events for Duke University Union, the largest student organization on campus! This is my third year within DUU and I’m excited to take on a more administrative and mentoring role. This fall, I will continue working with the sustainability office as one of the Interinstitutional Sustainability Collaboration Coordinator green devils. My primary role this year will be planning the Student Southeastern Sustainability Conference which is coming to Duke in the spring of 2025. Additionally, I am a Presidential Ambassador for the office of President Price, a volunteer with Durham County Public Schools with America Reads America Counts and a TGC mentor for middle school students at the Emily K Center! Last summer I went to Australia with the DukeIn Australia program for a course about biodiversity and this year I spent the summer as the Nonprofit Administration Intern at the Bald Head Island Conservancy in North Carolina.
I love being a SPIRE fellow because it is an organization that has provided me with a community of like-minded yet diverse students who support one another in any way possible. The program itself provides so many opportunities for its fellows, whether that be providing us with amazing mentors (major shoutout to the best mentor Brian McAdoo), bonding experiences (from ax throwing with the first years or pumpkin carving with goats), or academic guidance, there is always someone to help guide you along the way. And of course, my favorite part of SPIRE, our program directors, Amanda and Jeremiah. They have become such a keystone part of my Duke experience and genuinely always want what’s best for you. On any given week you can find me talking Jeremiah’s ear off in his cubicle or sitting in one of Amanda’s cozy office chairs with my iced chai.
My SPIRE experience has really provided me an opportunity to grow and create the kind of fellowship that I. Last year I served as the VP of First Year Engagement, and was really able to create the first year experience for our new class of fellows that I wanted to see. I was even able to teach our first year course, which was truly a highlight of my sophomore year and just such a special opportunity. I’m incredibly excited and grateful to serve as our President this school year and see all of the amazing things that the board cooks up!
